STN 01 · departure

Marcus Hale opened FlowPulseMindCore in the spring of 2019 out of a converted loading bay on Caldwell Street. The space was 1,400 square feet, smelled faintly of motor oil for the first six months, and had exactly two squat racks and a borrowed GHD. The name came from a notebook Marcus kept during his years as a strength coach at Ridgeline Athletic Club, where he spent five years coaching collegiate rowers and weekend runners. He kept writing the same three words in the margins of every program: flow, pulse, core. Not as a brand. Just as a reminder of what good training actually touches.

STN 02 · climb

The first year was genuinely hard. Marcus ran every session himself, six days a week, and the membership hovered around fourteen people for most of 2019. The turning point came in early 2020, which sounds like terrible timing, but when the world shut down Marcus started running small outdoor sessions in Caldwell Park, four people at a time, with a set of kettlebells in a duffel bag. Those sessions built something that the gym floor alone had not quite managed: a group of people who actually knew each other. When the doors reopened in late 2020, most of them came back and brought someone with them.

STN 03 · cruise

Today the gym runs out of a 2,800-square-foot space two blocks from the original loading bay. There are three coaches, a full rack setup, and a waiting list for the 6 am group slot on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Marcus still coaches four sessions a day himself and still writes every program by hand in the same kind of spiral notebook. The motor oil smell is gone. The fourteen original members are mostly still here.

Marcus Hale spent five years as a strength and conditioning coach at Ridgeline Athletic Club before opening FlowPulseMindCore in 2019. He trained under Petra Voss at the National Coaching Institute in 2013 and spent two seasons working with collegiate rowing teams before moving into general population coaching. He holds a CSCS and a kettlebell instructor certification from StrongFirst. Outside the gym, Marcus runs a slow 10k most Sunday mornings and keeps a small vegetable garden that he describes as "mostly optimistic." He believes the best program is the one you actually finish, and he has the notebooks to prove it.
